Rare books
State Library rare book materials will now be viewed in the Battye Researcher's Room on the 4th floor of the State Library Building. A current Researcher's Ticket must be shown before access to the Battye Researcher's Room will be allowed.
Viewing times for State Library rare books
Monday - Friday, 9:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Rare books are unavailable on public holidays. There may be a delay between requesting rare materials and having them made available on the 4th floor as retrieval from the rare book rooms is subject to staff availability.
Researcher's Ticket
Tickets will be issued by State Library staff at the 3rd level service desk. The ticket is valid for one year from date of issue. It is not transferable and must be shown to staff each time materials are requested or received. Some form of identification, such as a driver's licence, must be produced when applying for a Researcher's Ticket. Access to the Researcher's room requires some restrictions on personal items due to security considerations. As no bags or books may be taken into the Battye Library, researchers may wish to use the lockers on the ground floor.
Retrievals
No rare book retrievals may be placed after 3:30 pm. Up to five items in total will be retrieved at any one time from the State Library rare book rooms.
Conditions of use
State Library rare book materials, because of their rarity, must be treated with great care:
- Materials are not to be marked or damaged
- Loose items should be left in their original order
- Pencil only to be used for note taking
- Post-it notes are not to be used.
Copying
State Library rare book materials may not be photocopied.
End of use
When State Library rare book materials are no longer required, they should be handed to the staff member on duty. All materials should be returned by 4:30pm. Rare book materials cannot be removed from the Battye Library Researcher's Room.
Research Collection of Children's Literature
This collection is intended primarily for the purpose of research and registration is restricted to researchers aged 18 years and over. Researchers requiring access to the collection for more extensive use will need to make a prior appointment with Research Collection of Children's Literature staff. Please direct enquiries about the collection to the Arts and Literature reference desk.
These records are held in trust for future generations.
