Film Screenings

The State Library regularly presents free film screenings in the comfortable surroundings of the State Library Theatre.

The Wednesday Matinee features films and videos from the collections held by the Library. Screenings usually run for about 60 minutes. Admission is free and screening start at 12.30pm. Bookings are not necessary.

To enjoy some films before the matinees begin, check out the classic Australian films based on books screening on the big screen in the cultural centre as part of the Love2Read Cafe and the National Year of Reading.

City of dreams [2000] 55 min
Fascinating documentary explores the story of the American couple who won a controversial international competition in 1912 to design the new Australian capital in Canberra.

An informative and entertaining documentary which traces the role of nurses from pre-industrial times to the modern day.

Traditional foods are at risk of disappearing forever, as a speed-obsessed world turns increasingly to fast foods. To counter this trend, there is an international gastro-economic movement known as Slow Food. Its aim is to protect traditional culture, the environment and biodiversity by encouraging regional food production.

Explores the work of Peter Corris, his influences, writing style and geographic setting of his Cliff Hardy detective novels. Looks critically at the genre and also touches on his biography of Fred Hollows.

Explores the imaginative world of Australian novelist, Elizabeth Jolley, through readings, dramatized segments and witty and playful interviews in which she talks about the craft and practical problems of writing and her fictional treatment of old age, women’s relationships, exile and displacement.
